The Kipeto wind farm has just entered commercial service. It is the second largest installation of its kind in operation in Kenya, after the 310.25 MW Lake Turkana wind farm.
Kipeto Energy, the company responsible for developing the project, has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the state-owned Kenya Power Company (KPLC). BTE owns 88% of Kipeto Energy while the Kenyan company Craftskills owns the rest.
BTE has entrusted the construction of this facility to GE Renewable Energy, a company based in Paris, France and a subsidiary of the American conglomerate General Electric. GE has supplied and installed 60 wind turbines which feed their production into Kenya’s national electricity grid through a 220 kV transmission line from the Isinya substation.
The project required an investment of $ 344 million. It was funded by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (Opic), now the American International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), with a loan of $ 233 million. The remaining amount was provided by BTE.
